Community Information"E Komo Mai" (Welcome) to West Hawaii – Big Island North Kona, South Kona, Kailua Kona |
Nestled comfortably at the coastal base of the sleeping Hualalai Volcano, is the main western town on the Big Island of Hawaii known as Kailua-Kona. In the ancient times of Hawaii’s reigning Alii, or Royalty, this area was considered the premier place to reside. The exceptional weather, combined with abundant water and the wide variety of natural resources made the Kona coast one of the most desired locations in all the Hawaiian Islands.
Later, missionaries and entrepreneurs from several parts of the world arrived to build churches, homes, and businesses; turning this tiny fishing village into a small seaport and a hub of early Hawaii commerce. Today, Kailua-Kona along with the entire Districts of North Kona and South Kona are home to thousands of residents who choose this special place as their full or part-time home. In addition, the Big Island continues to attract visitors from around the world to appreciate and enjoy its natural beauty and that very special connection to old Hawaii.
Don’t miss the main thoroughfare of Kailua-Kona called Alii Drive. This picturesque drive wanders along the oceanfront, and right through the heart of the Kailua-Kona village from the Kailua Pier to the Kuamo'o Battlefield. This charming town mixes numerous historical sites with modern tourist attractions. Quaint restaurants, shops, and hotels line the ocean “makai” and mountain “mauka” sides of Alii Drive. Spectacular Sunsets can be viewed from the seawall in winter and many other spots along Alii Drive all year long.
Kailua-Kona is also home to the world renowned Ironman Triathlon. This annual race begins in Kailua-Kona just to the left of the Kailua Pier where athletes start by swimming 2.4 miles in open ocean, then ride bikes for 112 miles through the lava fields north of town and finally run a 26.2 mile marathon to complete the rugged course right back in the heart of town…wow that's just nuts!
